Toyota OEM 4.88 differential Identification
Did you know some Toyota trucks and 4runners, came factory with 4.88 differentials? It's true. They showed up in certain models that came with the 3.0 Liter V6 motors, from the late 80's and early to mid 90's. While there are different ways to tell from the door tag if the vehicle came factory with a 4.88 differential, there is one sure fire way to tell if the differentials you are looking at, is an OEM 4.88.
Look at the housing. For the OEM 4.88 differentials in question, Toyota cast a unique housing. It is offset closer to the ring gear than other V6 differentials, and can be identified by a line on the oiling channel of the housing. If you have a V6 differential, and it has this line present, then it is designed to fit the OEM 4.88 gears.
